PHPStorm high memory usage version 2016.1.2

I've been getting a lot of performance issues since about 3 months ago. When editing code the IDE hangs for a couple of seconds then resumes as normal for about 5 minutes then does it again.

I noticed the memory usage of the IDE was starting at around 600mb and going up to 2gb the longer I used it. I increased the xmx setting in the options file to 4gb just to be sure and I have excluded the bower_components folder and node_modules folder so they are not indexed. These 2 hotfixes have helped a lot but the memory usage is still going upwards to 3gb and keeps rising unless I quit PHPStorm and restart it.

The fixes I've made seem to be temp fixes and hasn't actually fixed the underlying issues. Any ideas?
