Pycharm EDU Debugger

I'm a HS teacher and have been using PyCharm Community but would like to use Pycharm Edu instead, however, it seems the Edu version debugger does not have the same capabilities as the Community edition. Is that correct?

Hi Mike!

Actually PyCharm Edu uses the same debugger as PyCharm Community. The only thing that is different is the UI. It's a little bit simplified in Edu version. You also don't need to put any breakpoints (but they still work), the debugger always stops on the first line.

There is a short demo video about PyCharm Edu debugger:

Hi Liana-

The main difference that I noticed that was

-in the Community version when I get to a LOC that prompts user for input ie name = input("enter name"). I'm able to switch to the console tab, enter the input, and then return to the debugger tab and it continues debugging.

-However in the EDU version when I get to a LOC that prompts user for input I get message "Pause console to continue" or something along those lines. If I choose step over or step into, etc debugger just ends. Doesnt continue debugging any code below input statement.

What am I missing?

thx for your help.

Mike

Yes, that's a known issue that exists in PyCharm Community too, but only with interactive debug console turned on (in Edu Edition it's turned on by default all the time that's why you faced this issue only in PyCharm Edu). The good news is that we're going to release new version really soon (at the beginning of August), where this bug has been already fixed.

You can also find more details about this issue by following this link:

We've also recently launched Preview Program for the new version. You can sign up to get Preview build with the fix :)
