Pycharm 2016.2 hangs while typing, then resumes

Answered

Hi all,

My first post here.  After upgrading to 2016.2 (and reinstalling my crashed laptop), PyCharm seems to be hanging pretty much all the time when typing. I type code, don't get any suggestion popups etc, but text input just hangs for 2-3 seconds. It resumes shortly afterwards but is really irritating.  I have tried changing settings (highlighting level set to minimum) and two different Java versions (oracle java 8 and openjdk 9) but the result is the same. When it freezes, it doesn't show any activity in "background tasks" window.

I don't seem to find help by googling. Everything I can find are complete freezes that require a restart.  The laptop is a powerful MSI laptop with 16gb of memory and Ubuntu 16.04.   This combination used to work absolutely fine until I had to reinstall the laptop from scratch. I must have now an offending component somewhere, but no means locating it.  The laptop itself doesn't freeze, just Pycharm.

I have also tried power save mode and disabling auto code completion popups but still the same result.

Please file a bug report at our issue tracker and attach your CPU snapshots taken during the time PyCharm is hanging.

I see this same problem with 2016.3 on OS 10.10.5. Almost once a minute the user interface just freezes. The task monitor shows PyCharm 'not responding' for a few seconds, then recovers. REALLY annoying. Please fix this.

I had a similar issue. It seemed that every time I wrote a couple characters, the auto save kicked in for the .idea folder which had trouble for a few seconds, then came back (I could see Windows explorer flashing the background for the .idea folder). I'm not sure exactly what caused it, but I know i had changed my password recently, and my computer had to force reboot due to running out of battery, and that's when this started to occur. I rebooted safely, and when it came back up, I had to enter my new credentials for the various accounts. Things like the system backup program, and global VPN program, etc. After I did that, the issue went away. Could have been a coincidence.

UPDATE: Seems that was a coincidence. The real issue seems to come from the project having too many files to check with version control (maybe because it is an unregistered VCS). I created an empty project and just opened my files manually and the issue went away.

In Googling to resolve this same problem, I found this thread. How can I resolve this issue? I'm using 2017.2.2, but this happened frequently in previous versions as well. I have a powerful machine, with Xeon processors, and plenty of RAM. For me, however, the wait is like 10 seconds, not just 2-3 seconds (I wish it were so short). This also particularly happens when I go to select a word, such as when I double click a word.

Hi David! Please create a bug report in our tracker and attach zipped log folder from Help | Show Log in .... We'll investigate the problem. As a possible workaround - try to disable custom plugins if there're any, some of them can cause this problem.

I get the same problem with 2017.3 on Windows 10  (64bit quad core machine with 8gb RAM). When it happens there is nothing in the status bar, PyCharm is totally frozen for a few seconds.  Everyrthing else on the machine is still responsive. I will try your tracker.

I just removed .idea and everything went back to normal.

I am having the same problem, though I can attribute it to something specific. While I am running a program called FreeFileSync in order to back-up files from a network drive to a local USB drive PyCharm will stop frequently and not allow me to type. As soon as I stop the file sync process then PyCharm behaves normally.

When PyCharm is locked there is next to no CPU usage. The stoppages are about 1 minute long and happen every 2-4 minutes. This does not happen in IntelliJ, only PyCharm.

@Dmclean Please report the issue to https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/PY and attach full contents of your logs folder (see "Help | Show Log in ..." menu). PyCharm creates thread dumps in that folder every 5 seconds if the UI is freezing.

I forgot to note that I was using PyCharm 2017.2 and FreeFileSync 10.1. Updating to PyCharm 2018.2.4 and FreeFileSync 10.5 has fixed the problem.
