Performance stutters and lag in 2024.2 versions

Answered

After updating to any of the 2024.2 versions in macOS, the IDE is constantly stuttering and freezing even in very simple operations. Scrolling through files is jumpy and typing shows very noticeable lag.

Going back to 2024.1 solves all these issues and everything runs buttery smooth.

I have tried the recommended performance tuning to no avail. I mainly use RubyMine, but DataGrip shows the same behavior.

Is anyone else having these problems?

I am having the same problem, using PyCharm (and other JetBrains products). Not experienced anything like this before 2024.2. Using a macBook with Apple M1 Max CPU and 64 GB RAM, macOS 12.7.4 (21H1123). Downgrading helped.

I've also tried “Restore Default Settings” before downgrading, and that did not help.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your experience. First, please check whether the problem persists in 2024.3 EAP version. If so, then could you please submit your request directly on our trackers:

for RubyMine https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/RUBY

for PyCharm https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/PY

Please provide the following details there:

1. how often and in which circumstances does it occur?

2. please record a CPU snapshot while reproducing the problem

3. attach the whole logs' folder (Help - Collect Logs..)

Thanks Olga! Switching to 2024.3 EAP did improve performance a bit from my experience, but lag is still present, even if not as noticeable.

I will open the ticket just in case it can be of any help to the team.

Same here, still on 2024.1. Once every month or so I check the current version to see if it's improved, but then switching back again.. Last time it felt OK for a few hours, but then I had an issue with files not being saved, which drove me crazy cause I didn't know why my changes weren't reflected in the browser or testrunner. Please guys, check the quality before releasing. I spend way to much time on restarting and being fooled by some new bug that gets my out of my workflow. Will check the EAP version but doubt it's really going to fix it.

I am on 2024.3.5 (Community Edition) IntelliJ Idea. I'm seeing the same behavior in this version and the versions before.  It is just incredibly laggy when typing and scrolling. For example I typed out vector… and then s. And the s won't appear for a long time, many many seconds. Clicking out of the program and back in helps. Also, I can keep typing and what I'm typing does appear, but it's sort of like coding blindfolded.

I'm on MacBook Pro Intel based. 6 cores, 32 GB memory, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB.

I've tried a few things like allowing IntelliJ to have more memory and disabling some of the typing assistance features.

Is this expected in the CE edition? Do I need to pay? I use this software for course work. Nothing at all complicated.

For me the problem went away when upgrading macOS from 12 to 15 (Sequoia).
