IntelliJ freezing on clicking the Run button

Answered

I've just “upgraded” from the IntelliJ Community edition to the Ultimate version.

There's a very random and frequently occurring issue that makes the IDE unresponsive and requires termination of IDE via Task Manager. It happens after less than 10 uses of the “Run” button and is making this version / Edtion unusable.

Any top tips as to how to fix? This was not happening on the Community edition

IntelliJ IDEA 2024.3 (Ultimate Edition)
Build #IU-243.21565.193, built on November 13, 2024 - running on Windows 11

Thanks for letting me (+ others) know Jerome. Pleased that you could reproduce the issue. Look forward to an update / fix so I can switch back to the Ultimate version. Let me know if more information would be helpful.

and please inform the project leaders, developers, architects, etc., that if we have to choose between new features + functionality and and stability of work, most developers will choose stability. IMHO: so releasing a new version every few weeks that is not completely stable and not fully tested on all platforms is probably not the best idea. We have several dozens of purchased ultimate licences and many of our developers complained about the instability of the latest versions, as a result firms lose money and trust to the product.

Hi, all, please try to select `Help | Find Action` from the main menu, type `Registry...`, select it, and in the opened list, find and disable the `profiler.widget.in.run.console` option there, for a temporary workaround.

Thanks Jerome, I've just disabled that setting now. I'll see how things go. Not a long term solution I'm assuming.

Do you have a YouTrack issue ID so that we can track progress on a fix for this, please?

Hi All, please follow https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-363384/After-running-same-Java-code-several-times-the-run-button-shows-a-spinner-forever to get latest update on this issue. I see it's set to general visibility, and please let me know if there is any block opening the YouTrack issue, thanks.

Martin VE you could try Jerome's suggestion from the link here … https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/23046034767250/comments/23471845985810

FYI Jerome … I've yet to fully test but, before Christmas, things seemed to be behaving much better for me with this setting disabled.

Any update on this? I am teaching Kotlin to students at Imperial College London and I periodically get these freezes during my lectures, meaning I have to restart the IDE mid lecture. As per various comments above, this happens even with a completely trivial project. I'm on Windows. This seems like a really urgent problems.

Ah, I just saw the workaround posted above, which I will try.

Pleased you found it, Alastair. Be good to hear your experience of the workaround.

Jerome Guan is this likely to get fixed in an upcoming release? Any idea when?

Yes, the workaround seemed to do the job for me - no freezes during my lecture today!
