Seeking AI Integration Solutions for JetBrains IDEs Similar to Cline in VSCode and Cursor

I've been a long-time user of JetBrains IDEs, and with the recent advancements in AI technology, there are now more options for IDE clients that integrate AI agents. Specifically, Cline in VSCode and Cursor have an advantage in allowing users to freely choose AI backends like OpenAI and DeepSeek.

I would like to continue using JetBrains IDEs, but I'm curious if there are any plugins or solutions available that offer similar functionality. If anyone has information on this, I would greatly appreciate your insights.

Hi there,

Thank you for your question. I'd suggest starting with our AI Assistant plugin to see if it meets your requirements - https://www.jetbrains.com/ai/. Also, you can search for some plugins that use AI via our Marketplace - https://plugins.jetbrains.com/go .

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
I know that you can select a model using JetBrains AI Assistant. However, it is a paid service, so I was looking for something free if possible.

Hi there! Thank you for the prompt reply. As much as I'd wish to help, the AI Assistant is the only officially supported AI tool we can offer, however, you can search for thrid-party plugins on the marketplace to see if those meet your requirements better.

That are sad news. I have been an Intellij nerd for the past 6 years. Cursor and co. is just rocket launching away.

Thanks,

I searched for an AI Agent plugin with the following requirements, but couldn't find anything that met them.

- It's possible to connect directly by specifying the OpenAI API Key, rather than going through the company that issues the plugin.

- Or it can connect to a local openAI or Ollama compatible endpoint.

- It's not made in a specific country or region.

*The above requirements are necessary for the information security measures of the company I work for.

In that situation, I have decided not to introduce a third-party plugin for the time being.

However, Junie was recently announced, so I am looking forward to it.

Vadym Veprytskyi I know the Cline team is working on porting the plugin to the JetBrains family, and I would strongly urge JetBrains to support them, even to the extent of lending an engineer to help.

I imagine the initial hesitation would be, “why would we want to help a competitor?” But the truth of the matter is that as of right now the competition isn't between Junie and Cline-on-JetBrains; it's between Junie and Cline-on-VSCode, and to be frank, JetBrains is losing.

Cline has:

  • a larger community to provide support; all of my company's “how to use AI” workshops are centered around it, for example
  • better enterprise support, because it lets you bring your own API keys (and thus lets my business use the API keys that it purchases directly from the LLM providers, which lets my company prohibit training on the data)
  • a different model (the explicit plan-act), which at least for now does seem to be more successful
  • frankly, a head start over Junie on the technical aspects (better results, faster results)

IDEA is superior to VSCode on the core IDE functionality, and imo is worth the cost. But it is behind on AI. Today, I'm not even allowed to use Junie at work (because you don't have bring-your-own-keys), but even if I were, I wouldn't, because Cline is the better tool. These days I program with both IDEA and VSCode open, and use VSCode for Cline and IntelliJ for the “manual” coding. That means that the more AI becomes integral to my day-to-day, the less I'll use IDEA.

I'm lucky in that my subscription renewal isn't until October, but to be perfectly honest, if things continue this way, I'm not sure the cost will be justified anymore.

The faster Cline gets ported to IDEA, the better it'll be for keeping me as a return customer (and obviously I'm just one individual, but I doubt I'm the only one). Once you get that locked in, you'll be in a better position to iterate on Junie until it can compete with Cline within the JetBrains family.

So, again, I'd strongly urge you to support Cline in porting their product to JetBrains ASAP, and then worry about beating them on AI once you've secured the core IDE decision.

+1 I'm an IntelliJ fanboy and I want to keep on using it, but if it means I'm going to be behind compared to others on tools that improve productivity, I'll unfortunately have to make the switch. It's very important for IntelliJ to be on par with other IDEs on this.

I’m also looking forward to a similar tool from JetBrains.

The main problem with Jetbrains AI is that it does not allow corporate AI endpoint. This forces some of us to switch to VS code.

Hello, thank you for your comment!
I apologize for the long silence.

Please rest assured our team is working hard on improvements to the AI Services we offer.

Currently, AI Enterprise offers a Bring Your Own Key feature with a zero data retention policy, which also forbids the use of your data for training purposes: https://www.jetbrains.com/ide-services/ai-enterprise/

Our team of developers is improving the agent and the quality of the output. Overall, Junie is getting faster and smarter every day with the help of our developers.

It would be a pleasure to see you back with us soon, testing all the new features, QOL improvements and fixes we have planned and executed. There are many more to come.
