PyCharm 2025.3.x is unusable when external monitor(s) are attached to MacBook M1

As the title says. When using just my MacBook Pro M1 Max (64GB RAM) internal display, it works like a charm (pun intended). When I hook up one or both of my external monitors, launching PyCharm takes 10 or more minutes before the UI is even responsive. And once the UI is responsive, a simple click in an editor buffer or trying to type reminds me of trying to edit the file over a 2400 baud modem on dial-up. I've tried with all 3rd party plugins enabled and disabled and the experience is the same. I've also tried it with no 3rd party plugins and Metal rendering disabled, and it may be slightly better, but still essentially unusable
