IntelliJ IDEA causes Windows 10 to unexpectedly restart

Answered

Moved from https://youtrack-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360000005310-IntelliJ-IDEA-causes-Windows-10-to-unexpectedly-restart

For some strange reason, IntelliJ randomly causes my computer to reset. No BSOD... no error logs... nothing. The computer just resets with no warning. Windows doesn't even suggest a repair when rebooting. It's consistent and it definitely only occurs when running IntelliJ.

I can run my computer for over 24 hours without this occurring using other IDEs to edit the same projects. There are no java crash logs. There is this error in the idea.log:

This looks like a hardware problem.

Run some stress tests like those provided in Intel XTU application: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/771292-Stress-Testing-for-Beginners-Which-tool-should-I-use.

I believe it might be Intel's Spectre/Meltdown patch: https://www.windowscentral.com/intel-testing-fix-reboot-issues-caused-spectre-patch-older-cpus. It still only occurs when using IntelliJ, so it must be executing some instructions to cause this, though it's Intel's fault for a buggy patch. It's ridiculous that they call the issue "more frequent reboots".

Peter, is there a fix for this?

My Computer is still crashing when using Intellij.

Hello Ilan,

Does your computer also restart or IDEA just crash?

Seeing the same problem. While running the IntelliJ (IntelliJ IDEA 2018.1.6 (Ultimate Edition)
Build #IU-181.5540.7), on Windows 10, on multiple occasions,  the message"Shutting down" appears(see attached shuttingdown.jpg). After re-starting the PC, it will show "Shutting down" again, even after restarting multiple times.

Don't know if it is related: I get the windows10 screen of death several times a day since last week (an a few times 3 moths ago), but only if I have IntelliJ idea Ultimate 2018.1 running. Mostly shortly after starting IntelliJ. Today I found a "replay_pid5716.log" on my \Desktop folder after the last crash, (when IntelliJ was just starting when the crash occurred again). The file is 1,5 MB and starts with the first line: 'JvmtiExport can_access_local_variables 0' and ends with line 22.972: ''compile com/intellij/execution/ExecutorRegistryImpl$ExecutorAction canRun (Lcom/intellij/openapi/project/Project;Ljava/util/List;)Z -1 3'.

In the idea log I see around that time several com.intellij.util.indexing.StorageException: java.io.EOFException and com.intellij.util.io.PersistentEnumeratorBase$CorruptedException."

In the build.log I see at the end a " WARN - channel.DefaultChannelPipeline - An exceptionCaught() event was fired, and it reached at the tail of the pipeline. It usually means the last handler in the pipeline did not handle the exception." (IOException)."

I do not see these things at the time of the other crashes, so maybe they are just consequences of the crash.

I just ran a "Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool" check and this found no errors.

Nothing came out of the memtest86. But no spontaneous restarts since then either. If I get them again and I find a commonality, I'll report it here.

I am facing the same issue. Intellij is automatically restarting my windows

Hello,

Is it possible to share idea.log ("Help | Show Log in...") after restarting IDE?

How do I upload this log file.

You can submit a ticket at https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/requests/new and attach the file there or upload the file at https://uploads.services.jetbrains.com/ and specify the name here.

I believe the issue is caused by Java itself. I'm experiencing it either in InelliJ (PyCharm specifically), and Minecraft, for example. As for other symptoms, my keyboard is sometimes flashing, like it's loosing power for a moment. Worth noting, that no such issues occur while using PC without having active Java applications.
