Intellij Android development without Gradle 2018

I want to know if there is a way to create android projects in Intellij 2018 that do not use Android Studio or Gradle. At the moment I'm reverting to using Intellij 15 because I have had numerous issues with the android studio components and I prefer to not use Gradle. I will continue to use 15 if I must but I'd prefer to use a later version if possible.
