Remote execution setup

I'm in my eval period for PyCharm Pro, and I've become frustrated! I have PyCharm installed on my Mac, and I need to write and debug code on a Raspberry Pi. After several tries, and poring over your documentation and user interface, I remain unable to properly configure PyCharm Pro to execute my code remotely (on the Raspberry Pi). I've followed the instructions for "Configuring Remote Interpreters via SSH", but they simply do not work! All I can get is an sftp connection, which apparently doesn't support remote execution. Why is this so obtuse and confusing?

I've been using XQuartz to run IDLE on a remote host for years. This is so easy to do! Why is PyCharm so ^$*t%@! hard?!
