IntelliJ updating does not work

Are you sure the patch is successfully downloaded?

Try disabling these plugins:

Also try to launch IDE from terminal: go to /Applications/IntelliJ IDEA 2018.2.app/Contents/MacOS, run IDEA by ./idea and update again.

If issue remains, delete the log file, restart IDE, reproduce the issue and attach idea.log.

As a workaround install from https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download to a new empty directory.

Thank you! For reasons I still don't quite understand running it via command line with the binary directly worked, I didn't disable any plugins.

I noticed that after the downloaded completed and I hit restart to complete the update I saw a dialog box with a progress bar showing the patching before the splash screen came up.  This was not happening before. Before I'd hit update and I'd see the progress bar for the download, then see the message to update and restart but upon restart I would just see the splash screen and I'd still be on the same version; no patching progress window.

In the past I would just download the entire application again to update but it was a bit inconvenient for small patches.

This problem still exists for me with macOS Catalina and Rider 2019.2.2 to 2019.2.3 - very annoying and yep so much for auto update have to download whole package each time :-(

Do you get any error/warning messages? Is it possible to share idea.log and update.log (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241085-Locating-IDE-log-files)?

No errors or warnings, it acted as if it worked but did not.  Same problem occurs in PHP Storm.

Have you tried to run IDE from command line as suggested above?

I will have to wait until next patch is released and the problem happens again before I can say that running it from terminal will work or not.  However, it seems rather pointless to have an auto update fail and not notify the user when they run the application from the provided preferred startup icon/method.

Just check my WebStorm and it was due for an update as per: -

I clicked on "Update and Restart" all happened with no errors and runner ran and relaunched WebStorm automatically and I checked and nope still on 2019.2.3

So tried this

cd /Applications/WebStorm.app/Contents/MacOS/

./webstorm

Check for Updates..

Update and Restart

Is it possible to run IDE from command line with sudo rights? Looks like some permission issue prevents patch unpacking.

I tried but it needs me to re setup and register with my licence etc.  Don't want to risk losing access to to licence in my own profile.

You could activate it using Evaluation license.

Did sudo ./webstorm then selected try eval licence and did update and exactly the same problem still no error and no update.

Hello, a simple fix for me was to run IntelliJ as administrator.
