cannot create new project

Hello!
Im trying to create a new project to fix my sdk issue but even after making a brand new project intellij cannot resolve any of the symbols and most things like 'String' 'System' are all coming up red.
java 10.0.1 jdk is defined in my project sdk
module dependencies is java the same 10.0.1
platform settings sdk is the same 10.0.1
I have tried re downloading java, few different versions of jdk, reinstalling intellij. After every attempt at fixing I would restart/invalidate caches.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Do you see the symbols red in Editor or there are not error highlighting but only compilation fails with errors? What IDE version do you use?
