Editor disappearing cursor (weird)

Answered

My PHPStorm and OS:

PhpStorm 2018.1.4
Build #PS-181.5087.24, built on May 18, 2018
JRE: 1.8.0_152-release-1136-b39 amd64
JVM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM by JetBrains s.r.o
Linux 4.15.0-22-generic
Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic beaver (using Xorg)

Clean ubuntu install about 2 months ago
Clean PHPStorm install from snap

Installed plugins: ignore, dotenv, editorconfig, bashsupport, php-annotation, symfony2.

A coworker who uses Kubuntu (18.04 also) has same problem.

As far as I can remember, this didn't happen with 17.10

My issue:

Hard to explain, so I'll post a video below.
Problem is that after interacting with any popup window (intentions popup, search string/file/everywhere popup, ...), even if I do nothing and cancel with ESC, the editor loses the cursor, partially, which means:

  • Cursor becomes transparent
  • I can move it (up, down, left, right) as I see it highlighting some tokens
  • I can't write anything besides tabs
  • I can delete characters with backspace/del keys
  • CTRL+TAB to change editor tabs doesn't work
  • ALT+ENTER to bring in intentions popup does work

The only way to make it work back is either click with mouse, or change to another app and return to PHPStorm with ALT+TAB.

I use the intentions menu very often, so this is a drawback for me.

Same issue here on PyCharm 2019.3 on Mac OS X. It usually happens when I switch to another app, then back to PyCharm. I then need to switch to another editor tab  and back within PyCharm to get the cursor back. Extremely annoying.

Already fixed, the fix will be available with the next minor release: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-191839
No ETA right now, unfortunately,
Please consider switching to EAP for the time being: https://www.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/eap/

Happy to read that!

I'll try the EAP. Thanks.

Karolfiturski Please check if these reproduction steps suit your issue: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-226795
If they don't, please describe how we can reproduce the issue locally. Thank you!

I'm having the same problem with RubyMine 2019.3. Exactly the same. Reproduction steps are simply switching away and returning to a no-cursor state. Just started happening this evening.

Happens to me on Clion 2020.02.01. Ubuntu 18.04.

If I switch to another editor outside Clion (like this comment window), or click on the debugger window, the cursor comes back.

I'm not sure exactly what's causing it, but I am running the debugger and hitting a break point when it occurs. From then on, it always happens when I hit the first breakpoint in a simulation.

After restarting CLion, hitting a breakpoint does not cause the cursor to disappear.

Should've been fixed in 2020.1. If possible, please submit a new report to our tracker at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue

Its 2021 and I still have annoying problem of disappearing cursor...

I'm running All Toolbox Apps with my Ubuntu from 2018 and this problem still exists on all programs! Guys Mercy!

I always use "super heavy feature" -> "Save as" and cursor disappears: this is the movie: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZFC2gYqSEW6vvdfcHEEAnHTnAzs0culP/view?usp=sharing

I have to click into editor, then cursor appear again, but... its so much annoying from 2018!

I need more info about your layout: is it a main IDE window or it's a detached tab?

0

This is the main IDE window, I have minimalist configuration, no menus etc, I'm working mainly with IDE actions for that, its faster

And system doesn't matter, I have the same problem on Windows 10... I tried switch JDK from Oracle to Open in Ubuntu and vice versa... And... problem still exists!
