Linux: Opening project with IntelliJ 2018 that was created with 2017

Answered

I have dozens of projects created with earlier versions of IntelliJ 2017. I tried to open one today using 2018 and ended up with the following

This project is completely non functional and it makes no sense to me. This seems like a very common use case, and why it wouldn't "just work" is really a puzzle. I'm missing something, I suppose, but can't for the life of me figure out what.

Stack Overflow has directed me here  and here, and while those links have enabled me to move somewhat forward, I'm still very much at a loss as to why I have to jump through such hoops for a very common task.

Is there a defect in IntelliJ 2018 that is getting in the way of opening older projects in a straight forward manner? What am I missing?

Hello. Normally IDEA should open any project created using previous versions. Could you please provide project example to check?

I have a project that demonstrates the problem (actually many). How would you like me to provide it to you?

Could you please put it on a github, and provide a link?

Easier for me to post it here. Please advise when you've grabbed it so I can remove.

Hi. I have downloaded the project, after setting the SDK, it runs fine. Does it help if you set SDK at File | Project Structure?
