No Open Window Showing Up

What is your OS? Do you run IDE in a full screen mode? Please provide information from "About" dialog. Are there any errors in log?

Try if reinstalling into a new empty directory from https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download help.

OS is macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I run it in windowed mode. Logs showed nothing meaningful.

However, I was able to resolve the issue by deleting the directory under ~/Library/Preferences/IntelliJIdea2018.3

I am seeing the same problem, but deleting the preferences directory doesn't seem to help.  I am using IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate 2018.3.4 on a Mac OS 10.11.6. When I attempt to open a new project window, the new project window does not appear. Here are the steps I take to see this problem:

1. Have IntelliJ running and have a project window open.
2. Use the File > Open... menu item, and pick a different project folder, and click 'Open'.
3. When prompted to open new window vs. use existing window, choose 'New Window'.
4. IntelliJ's 'Loading Project...' progress bar appears, and I see the laptop CPU usage increase momentarily as if the project is loading, but then no project window appears.
5. Confirm the new project window is not open by cycling through the application's open windows using Command + `.

If I then use File > Open... and attempt to open the same project a second time, then the new project window appears immediately without the 'Loading Project...' progress bar and without the CPU usage increase, indicating that the project was loaded during the original attempt to open it - it was just not displayed.  I have tried disabling all plugins that were not bundled with IntelliJ IDEA 2018.3.4 but I am still seeing this issue.  The idea.log file shows these messages when I attempt to open the project the first time:

The second time I use File > Open..., no additional messages are logged to idea.log. Also, I tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/IntelliJIdea2018.3, and I did not import settings when I restarted.  Does anyone know what might cause this?

Thanks Liubov, I downloaded and installed Ultimate 2019.1 EAP, and the problem no longer occurs with that version.  I can move up to it when it is available.

Saved Application State seems to be an issue.

I solved it by deleting this folder: /Users/YOUR-USER/Library/Saved Application State/com.jetbrains.WebStorm.savedState

Thanks @Pauls for the tip.  I am still running 2018.3.5.  I tried deleting saved application state, and unfortunately the problem continued to happen for me.

But I have tried the 2019.1 EAP based on suggestion from Liubov and it did fix the problem.  The only reason that I haven't upgraded permanently is that I do not have a perpetual fallback license yet for 2019.x.  Once I have a perpetual fallback license, I will upgrade.

Hi guys, I am using IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate 2019.2 on a Windows 10, and suffering under the same problem. If I close current project and open one existing, that leads to no showing up the IDE window. After restart the IDE it seemed to be open but I can't see the IDE window. At clicking on the Intellij icon IDE pretends to be open but I don't get the focus. So I can't work anymore.

@... If you are unable to open pycharm with the launcher icon or shortcut, better try to open it with terminal.

Open command-prompt/powershell > type pycharm > pycharm window will open up.

This is the best method to open pycharm if not opening with shortcut.

Note: i also had the same problem but this was my experiment😁😎

I just had this happen with IntelliJ IDEA 2020.3.2 (Ultimate Edition) on macOS 10.15.7 . I had hidden the main window then quit, and no window showed when I restarted IDEA. I solved it by clicking the icon in the Mac Dock. HTH

I had the same behavior and FINALLY SOLVED it for Windows 10:
Just hover above the IDEA icon in the task bar and right-click on the little preview and choose "Maximize".

I had the same behavior with IntelliJ IDEA 2021.2(Community Edition) on macOS Big Sur 11.6 and finally solved it doing:
On IntelliJ tools bar... > Window > Zoom. In my case, when I click the icon in the Mac Dock, only tools bar appear
