IntelliJ IDEA 2019.1 freezes on macOS after computer's wakeup
Answered
Hey there,
Just updated to the latest version of IntelliJ IDEA this week.
When I go back home after work, I put my computer in sleep mode.
In the morning after, when I wake up my computer, I find that my IntelliJ IDEA is frozen and not responding.
These are my version details:
IntelliJ IDEA 2019.1 (Ultimate Edition)
Build #IU-191.6183.87, built on March 27, 2019
JRE: 1.8.0_202-release-1483-b39 x86_64
JVM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM by JetBrains s.r.o
macOS 10.14.4
Thanks for your help!

See https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-1393.
IntelliJ IDEA + JBR11 should not have this problem: http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/index.html.
Unfortunately, I use JDK8 for my projects.
Is there another way to fix it?
It doesn't affect JDK used for your projects. IDE can run on JBR11, while your projects can use any JDK from 1.3 to 12.
The upgrade to JBR11 version requires me to upgrade my Gradle version (Could not determine java version from '11.0.2'), but I want to keep it as is for now.
You can set IntelliJ IDEA to use project JDK for Gradle:
I've done that already, got the same message as before.
You can try switching to JBR8 from IntelliJ IDEA 2018.3.6 release: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/206544879.
Use this build: jbsdk8u152b1343.28
For now, I am choosing to stay with the 2019.1 + JBR8 version.
I just need to remember to close my IntelliJ IDEA before the end of the day.
Looking forward to a fix for this issue.
Thanks in advance.
Could you please share the thread dumps when the IDE didn't respond after wake? Please see https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/206544899.
You can upload them here: https://uploads.services.jetbrains.com/. Thanks.
As for the problem with the old Gradle version when IDE runs on Java 11, it appears to be a known issue:
https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/8431
https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-208999 .
I did upload my thread dump, you can find it under the file name "dump.txt".
Thanks again.
The same issue happens with Goland 2019.1 - frozen after the wakeup. I also uploaded the dump under goland.txt name just in case.
The issue was reported at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-210361, please follow it for updates.
Can confirm this consistently happens on my machine as well.

Same here, 2019.1 freezes 10.13.6 (High Sierra) regularly since the upgrade. I'll follow https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-210361 for updates.
PHPStorm also freezes on MacOS Mojave after sleep. The interface is completely frozen, and pixels are being drawn slowly from top to bottom, left to right. Very weird.
The only way to continue using it is to Force Quit and restart the app.
Would that help?
Edit:
/Applications/IntelliJ IDEA.app/Contents/bin/idea.properties
add:
sun.java2d.opengl=false
You should never edit the files inside the IDE installation: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/206544869.
The solution for now is to run on JBR11: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/206544879.
Same problem with PHPStorm on macOS Mojave, plz fix!
The problem is already fixed, but there is no IDE with the fix released that runs on JBR8.
You either download the IDE with JBR11 or switch to the new JBR8 build that contains a fix: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-1393#focus=streamItem-27-3479261.0-0 .
Or you wait for the next IDE release with JBR8 which already contains the fix.
Thank you all for your responses. However, while i tried installing the JBR plugin, the issue still reproduces. I followed the MAC instructions at https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/206544879. From those instructions, just installing the latest version of IntelliJ should have resolved the issue, but it didn't. I have JB SDK Bintray Downloader plugin installed, but that didn't resolve the issue. I still have to kill the IntelliJ process a few times every day. Below is the "about" copy/paste. I feel that as a subscription licensed customer, this issue ought to have been fixed by now. I may try wiping my IntelliJ install and trying again from scratch. I tried that in April, but no luck. Perhaps May is a lucky month.

You didn't switch to the new runtime build.
You should try this JBR build https://bintray.com/jetbrains/intellij-jbr/download_file?file_path=jbrsdk-8u212-osx-x64-b1562.tar.gz.
Switch Boot JDK to jbrsdk-8u212-osx-x64-b1562 per https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/switching-boot-jdk.html.
Or just download IntelliJ IDEA with JBR11 from http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/index.html:
Thank you Serge. Deleting and installing IntelliJ did not work for me. What worked was installing jbrsdk-8u212-osx-x64-b1562 and switching the boot jdk. Thank you!
I have the same problem but with RubyMine 2019.1.2 on Mac OS 10.14.5.
I'm having this exact same problem with PHPStorm 2019.1.2 on macOS 10.14.5. (updated this week to macOS 10.14.5 and noticed this today)
Please see https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-1393 for the workaround. The fix will be available in the next update.
Thanks for the reply. I'll post tomorrow whether I didn't encounter this anymore today.
Didn't crash since yesterday 👍
I am really feb up with the latest Intellij IDE. It just crashes , really impacting the work now.
