Basic authentication in custom repository URL

Hi,

Is it possible to specify basic auth in the URL of a custom plugin repo ? Something like: https://user:password@custom_repo/path_to_updatePlugins.xml

Doing that results in:

"Connection Failed"

in the "Manage Plugin Repositories" UI screen or:

"failed to load plugin descriptions from ... : Request failed with status code 401"

in the logs.
