Is it slow only when right clicking? Please try disabling all custom plugins at Settings | Plugins > Installed: Downloaded, restart IDE and check the issue after that.

There are no similar reports so far so you might want to run a full investigation on this with the help of this article: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241235-Reporting-performance-problems

I also have this issue with more recent updates - right-click context menus take forever sometimes and the IDE becomes unresponsive for a while.

Rchandarana, please submit the logs (Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data) in a support ticket (Help | Contact support) after you reproduce the issue, it may be IDEA-226949, but we need the logs to confirm that. Thank you!

Same for me. It could be because I use HDD.

With IntelliJ  Ultimate   2020.2.3 this started appearing for me too.Used to take 1 second or less. Now takes around 15 seconds.

Totally crippling.

I also noticed that loading a class by Ctrl+Click on class name now takes several seconds compared to 0 time before.

Code completion also takes 10-15 seconds instead of the usual 0-1 second.

In Community Edition, there is no such issue. I use Struts2 plugin in the Ultimate Edition, apart from that I am not aware of much difference for the actual project.

I dont see any unusual things in the linux syslog on the machine.

I have the same issue. For certain python files(not all of them), pycharm slows down dramatically when right clicking. When the right click menu pops up, it gives me the option to "recompile" my code for some reason, among many other weird options that don't normally pop up.

I also have the same issue. Whenever right-clicking files or folders in the project's file structure, there is a 5 second lag before the context menu appears. I do not have any custom plug-ins installed.

As it could be the issue below, please check if it is still reproducible in PhpStorm 2020.3 EAP build:

Denz0x13, the issue discussed here has been resolved in 2020.3, you must be experiencing a different one.
Please contact support via Help | Contact Support attaching the logs (Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data).

I've experienced the same problem in 2021.3  When I disable scientific mode Pycharm gets back to normal, activated takes about 15 seconds to show left click menu.

I am having the same issue with 2021.3.1

I've found that, closing the "documentation" window solve the problem

The same problem was with 2022.1 while Bookmarks tab was opened, last update Build #PS-221.4906.9, built on March 4, 2022 fixed this.

Same here with PHPStorm Version 2021.3.3

This is still an issue in version: Build PhpStorm 2021.3.3 #PS-213.7172.28

It takes between 1 and 2 seconds for me, but this aggravates me to no end. https://youtu.be/O6cmInFUt4Q

Well, that should've been fixed in version 2021.3.2: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-64950.

We need to investigate that case again then. But firstly please try disabling all custom plugins at Settings | Plugins > click on a gear icon > "Disable All Downloaded Plugins", restart IDE and check the issue after that.

If that doesn't help could you please submit this to our tracker at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue? If you do this please reproduce the problem for half a minute while capturing CPU snapshot. Here's an article describing this, see the "The CPU usage is high or IDE is slow" section. Attach the resulting snapshot to your report.

Thank you, appreciate it. As I can multiple team are already investigating it.

As I can see the problem was fixed & the fix will be included in the next IDE release.

Problem still persists and even became worse in PhpStorm 2022.1. See bug: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-66583/Context-menu-takes-long-time-to-become-visible?_ga=2.197860070.871388208.1651861073-495159712.1647007841

While this was an annoying issue in previous versions (it happened every now and then), it has become a productivity issue since it now happens every single time and the context menu takes roughly ~10 seconds to become available.

Sorry, https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-66583 returns 404. Does it have limited visibility?

Dmitry Tronin Sorry, I had accidentally limited the visibility. Should be visible to everyone now.

I have the same issue on GoLand. The issue is not only by right-click, but also at random. The issue is even bigger when using network-drivers. For some reason, the network usage is almost 50mb/s, and that is a really small project.

The IDE freezes completely, and that happens at random, even when you just jump one line. The click-right is broken, it's not possible to open files or create files.

I rollback to GoLand 2021.3.4 and the issue is not present. So, the issue was introduced on 2022.1 and is also present on 2022.1.1, and seems to be worse on 2022.1.1.

I test the new EAP, from GoLand. That issue seems to be fixed. 🥳

I had this problem also for the last couple of months, just updated and right click on folders is instant now. Thank you!

Update: for whatever reason this issue has returned and I'm now back to slow right clicks on folders.

Rhys, is there any chance that you have folders marked as "Excluded" inside the folders that you are right-clicking at?
Is there anything specific about folders that are affected or it does not matter and all directories cause the issue?

Vasiliy Yur - I do have excluded folders it seems. But seems to be affecting every folder. It's strange, it can switch back and forth. I.e. I can load it up or at random times, the right click menu opens instantly as one would expect. Then after around 10 right clicks it switches and then takes 10+ seconds to open. Doesn't seem to be because of low ram or anything as even happens with just PHP Storm running. I have 8GB of ram on a Macbook 2020 M1.

I thought it might be caused by Material Themes but disabled this and problem still persists.

FYI, seeing exactly what T Sassen shows in his youtube video however mine seems to be 8-15s. Quite frustrating after a while when trying to code, but hopefully I'll find the fix soon.
