New Install, New Computer, PHPStorm Freezes Laptop
New Sytem76 Gazelle
inTel i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60 Ghz, 12 cores
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
16 GB RAM
500 GB SSD
PhpStorm 2019.3.3, build #PS-193.6494.47, licensed copy
mutter version 3.28.4
<strike>I just realized I did **not** yet install any base Java packages, Storm has it bundled - could this be the cause of the grief below? Going to run an install after another process has finished.</strike>
I have **four** computers with different environments, one of the others runs storm without issue. This is a brand new system with 18.04, I ran the recommended updates. PhpStorm is installed with Toolbox, which I felt funny about as I'm used to installing it via command line.
On running Storm it freezes with no apparent cause. Other programs running are limited, usually FireFox, Slack, and a VPN connection to our company network.
Just now it froze merely launching it. It is not an indexing issue, I know to wait until indexing is done. I have been to the threads below - in one case the suggested mutter updates are invalid (returns, "could not locate packages.") The point is moot, running mutter 3.28.4. I have applied the AskUbuntu S.O swap fix. No love.
As mentioned I have four Ubuntu installs and one of them is my **personal* Gazelle (this new one is my company's) and have never faced such consistent freezing in Ubuntu. My personal copy of Storm runs fine on my personal Gazelle, but it was installed a few years back with a different license and via command line, the instructions for which are either no longer available or really hard to find.
What do I need to do? This is all making me look pretty stupid in my company, and though that is a short walk I shouldn't be facing these difficulties. :-D
Edit:
open jdk 11.0.6 2020-01-14 installed, rebooted, in a couple instances it opened for a few minutes before freezing, in others it just froze on opening. In one instance I accidentally opened it and closed it immediately, could hear the fan running high, and if froze after it was closed.
During this time I had the system monitor open. Out of 16 it was using a littleover 3 GB RAM and only three cores, most of them under 10%.
Edit #2: After all the above, uninstalled storm and I did a command line install per the instructions here.
https://www.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/download/#section=linux
As expected, it FROZE THE SYSTEM COMPLETELY. REISUB Alt+PrtScrn reboot. With nothing else running, opened Storm. LOCKED THE SYSTEM. Attempted to reinstall. IT FROZE AT THE USER AGREEMENT SCREEN.
What is going on?

I was able to capture one of the syslog entries at the time of the crash. Perhaps that will be helpful, if anyone responds to this thread. I would attach it but don't see that option. Note the intellij references beginning at Feb 29 11:42:25.

As one who doesn't know **jack** about deconstructing logs, I did some research, this may be of assistance to anyone encountering this issue. I have a question out to System76 to confirm, but as of this moment the system is running stable and no freezes in the last hour.
Note the first Oops line:
Feb 29 11:42:44 system76-pc kernel: [ 8888.174165] Oops: 0002 [#1] SMP PTI
Then in the following Call Trace section, the recurring calls to noveau:
Feb 29 11:42:44 system76-pc kernel: [ 8888.174331] nouveau_display_init+0x3f/0xd0 [nouveau]
My first suspect is always a graphics driver, but this time I overlooked it because it was new out of the box. In software and updates, the graphics driver was set to the X.org Noveau driver, and Nvidia was available. It is a bit confusing because lspci | grep VGA shows both an Intel and an Nvidia GPU. Being completely unusable in this state, I switched to the Nvida driver and the system is currently stable and not freezing.
It's looking like it's not an issue with Storm after all, which I'm relieved to hear. But thanks for all your help!
Sorry for the late reaction and thanks a lot for sharing the solution -- I believe it could very helpful to other users!
