PhpStorm freezes frequently

After updating the IDE to 2020.1.1 it has started to freeze every few minutes while editing code. Also most of the times I navigate to some other program and get back to PhpStorm, it will freeze as well for a few seconds until I can eventually edit the code.

It freezes up to 7 seconds and then goes back to normal. It looks like an indexing issue, but I can't seem to find the real root of the problem or a solution. I have excluded all directories that do not need to be indexed but it still freezes. Also increasing maximum heap size hasn't fixed the issue.

Logs and diagnosed data has been uploaded to https://uploads.services.jetbrains.com/ with name:

phpstorm_logs_ide_freezing.zip

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Is there any chance that you are using MacOS installation?

If this is the case and it happens randomly and not only during indexing, please try switching "Greyscale" type of Antialiasing in "Appearance & Behavior | Appearance"

I have been having the same issue for quite some time now - going on several weeks I would say. Running PhpStorm on Ubuntu 18.04. It ran absolutely fine for several months - and I haven't changed anything as far as I know - but it now freezes every few minutes, sometimes every few seconds - and it tends to lock up my whole OS when this happens. I can see the CPU flat lining and then spiking when it happens.

I could be doing anything when it happens - but generally I am just editing code. I have tried applying general solutions found online such as excluding files for indexing but nothing has worked.

I have uploaded a file to https://uploads.services.jetbrains.com/ called

PS-201.7223.96_matt_06.05.2020_10.04.44.zip

Oddly, the problem seemed to occur less often while the CPU diagnostic was running - probably because it knew I was trying to report it for misbehaving!

Some days (like today) it happens so often that it completely ruins my workflow - I feel like I spend half my day waiting for it to catch up when all I'm dong is typing.

Really hope there is a fix for this soon...

Thanks.

Reporting performance issues on a community forum seems to make little sense - either way we'll need to take a look at the logs which you can't share here.

terje.nesthus, after the issue takes place again, could you please share your logs (Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data) within a support ticket (Help | Contact Support)? Thank you.

Yes it's an issue for me too. Running newset ubuntu + newest phpstrom. Common, it needs to be addresed. It's a serious issue that completely disables a fluent work!

Dmitry Tronin - When do you expect to resolve this issue because it's annoying? I'm using MacOS Catalina the latest version.

Emil Georgiev all freeze-related issues should be investigated individually. This particular report was created by a user on Linux that was most likely affected by a kernel bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1872001

I would suggest to investigate the issue you're facing in a separate report. Either at our tracker or by contacting us via Help | Contact Support.

Thanks, Dmitry for your suggestion regarding the Linux kernel on my post - https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-52889 (same link as above).

I tried the 5.3.0-45 kernel as you recommended and unfortunately this resulted in losing support for my trackpad, networking, second monitor etc. Having read through the bug issue that you linked above (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1872001), and after clicking through a few other posts and links, I found someone who had success with kernel 5.4.28.

I thought I would give it a go and so far everything seems ok - my hardware is functioning correctly as far as I can tell, and the freezing seems to have stopped.

Thanks again.

Can confirm here that after upgrading kernel to 5.4.28, PhpStorm seems to be working fine again. Before the kernel upgrade it would freeze every few minutes, and now it has stayed healthy with no freezes for like 4 hours.

Thanks!

This started happened for me, too (Linux Mint 20.1). And I did PhpStorm upgrade to 2021.1.3 today.

I changed the antialiasing to greyscale, let's see if it helps.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I did change the antialiasing to greyscale as instructed in the first comment, and I haven't experienced this problem anymore, even though I'm not using MacOS but Linux Mint 20.1.
