Frequent freezes and crashes in Ubuntu 20.04
Hi,
I have very frequent crashes (rendering pycharm unusable) with a new machine that runs on ubuntu 20.04. I'm on kernel 5.4.0-29-generic
This is the log:

Same here on arch with kernel 5.6.12, it also happens in clion and intellj. Before update 2020.1 those programs have never crashed. Here's a link to my logs: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VF_RCvAw8A83tktazSuRm0vfoKbdKl9c
Could you also upload the logs folder zipped from Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data?
Yes, I uploaded it to the same google drive folder.
Thanks!
threadDumps are the same as in https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-2269
Even though you are using a newer kernel version, could you rollback to 5.3.0-45 and let me know if the problem remains?
I have the same issue with PHPSTORM also in ubuntu 20.04, kernel 5.4.0-33-generic.
As a possible workaround, use the official Choose Runtime plugin to select the local native java runtime:
I have the same issue with IDEA Ultimate also in ubuntu 20.04, kernel 5.4.0-40-generic.
I'm seeing an issue running InteliJ Ultimate
My machine hangs and maxes out and I'm unable to kill the process. Is this the same defect
I am having the same issue with CLion 2020.1.2 in Ubuntu 20.04 and kernel 5.0.4-40-generic.
Hi,
This is an issue for PyCharm Community 2020.1.2 on my machine as well. I am currently running Ubuntu 20.04 on top of Kernel Linux 5.4.0-40-generic. Are there any plans to fix this? I would rather update the kernel than roll back to previous versions. However, I have not seen any recent acknowledgement from the developers on this issue. Any public response would mean a great deal.
Thanks
This has been fixed for me since update to this version (using built-in JRE):
Happens to me also in Gentoo (kernel; 5.4.28-gentoo) with clion-2020.2
Hi Marcus,
Please report it to the CLion issue tracker https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/CPP providing your logs folder zipped from Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data. We'll investigate.
I am also getting freezes Eclipse also makes freezes on Ubuntu 20. Although It was working fine for a month or so. Is there an issue opened for Ubuntu on this that we can track? Is it easy to get back to Ubuntu18?
Issue still exists PyCharm 2020.2.3 Ubuntu 20.04 5.4.0-52-generic
I know this sounds weird but the solution for me was deleting all files in the log directory of intellij.
Open Intellij, go to menu bar "Help" -> "Show log in file manager" and then delete ALL files and directorys in there. I never had a freeze anymore.
I am running PyCharm and IntelliJ on Ubuntu 20.04, and I just tried Paul6552's solution, and it worked for me as well. This is huge. The next questions are, why is that the solution, and what is causing this problem in the first place?
Big thanks to Paul.
This is still an issue on fresh Ubuntu 20.04 and 2020.3. Workaround did work. The system has abundance of resources. Also, crashing got a bit faster when I connected 3 monitors.
Paul6552's suggestion of clearing the log folder did not help me. I too have an abundance of resources, and my whole GUI system will freeze. I'm on Pop_OS 18.04. Looks like you are collecting logs for freeze issues. I have lots of folders in my log directory labelled things like
Happy to share thread dumps
Hello Adrian,
Please upload your logs folder zipped from ***Help | Collect logs and Diagnostic Data*** to the FTP
https://uploads.jetbrains.com/ and please let me know the filename.

Pretty sure its this issue: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-240090
Problem goes away if I switch to wayland from x11, or if I downgrade to 2020.2
I'm using Pop!_OS 20.04, Kernel 5.8.0-7360-generic, and Goland/Intellij (2020.1/2/3) all got freeze in UI. As Lejia replied in the ticket: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/requests/3047985.
Simply add the vmoption then issue resolved.
Hello Adrian,
Please make sure you have voted for https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-240090 and https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-2724 in order to be updated once it is resolved.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
For now, https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-2724#focus=Comments-27-4394783.0-0 seems like the only workaround.
I tried the 2 suggestions with no luck:
1) clean the log as suggested by Paul6552
2) and adding to idea64.vmoptions in config dir: (Antonina Belianskaya)
-Dawt.ime.disabled=true
Changing the runtime to Oracle JDK15:
build 15.0.2+7-27 [Local /usr/lib/jvm/java-15-oracle]
with com.jetbrains.ChooseRuntime, reduces the crash frequency but does not prevent it completely.
I am running Intellij on Ubuntu 20.04 with graphics driver nvidia-driver-455

I just filed the issue with a log and details.
Thanks
Hi,
Sergey Karpov
I filed an issue and sent the logs as requested some time ago:
https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-265502
but I had no feedback since.
I still have the issue: Intellij (and CLion) frequent crashes.
Besides Intellij crash, also Chrome and other apps that are open at the time also crash and close.
Sometimes, as today, the crash happens just after one or 2 minutes after opening Intellij.
I disabled all but the bundled plugins and did some video driver testing.
With the latest nvidia driver available at ubuntu repositories: nvidia-driver-465
and generic driver: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
the crash still happens.
Hi,
I just found that the crash only seems to happen when running on Ubuntu Unity desktop environment.
At least with Ubuntu desktop environment, or Ubuntu on Wayland desktop environment it does not seems to happen.
Sadly, I have similar problems on Ubuntu 22.04 and tried everything suggest here and more, still having problems. Very sad, but after years of happily using CLion and PyCharm I have to move to a different IDE.
Hi,
Could you please try disabling all non-bundled plugins and check if the issue persists? Otherwise, please create an issue on YouTrack.
