Opening detached editor tabs in the same window

So I know you can use Shift + Enter to open an editor tab in a new window, but that always opens a new window. Wondering if it is possible to open detached tabs in an already detached window?

Unfortunately, no. Recently we've fixed https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-209250 (not available yet) so now the file will open in the previously focused editor (you'll have to enable ide.navigate.to.recently.focused.editor in the Registry first). Will it be useful to you? If not, could you please describe your use case in more details?

I think that may be what I need. My use case is that I have a Macbook Pro and a vertical monitor setup. I like the main Intellij window on the MBP and the editor window on the vertical monitor. Right now I have to drag the editor tabs over manually, and Shift + Enter just opens a new editor tab on the MBP screen.

We plan to release the aforementioned fix no later than in version 2020.3. 

Let me know if you need some additional functionality after trying it.
