Project Tabs
I was using PyCharm 2020.2 and had multiple project open in completely separate tabs, much like browser tabs. I could easily switch between projects in 1 window. I just updated to 2020.3 and now projects open in a completely separate window or attach to my current project neither of which I want. I'm just wondering how to get the project tabs feature back, I can't seem to find anything about it online but it was really amazing.
To explain further, just imagine you're using Chrome and have 3 tabs open, each tab takes you to a separate Pycharm project. Didn this feature go away in the new release? I am not talking about attaching projects where they just have 2 separate root dirs in the projects sections nor am I talking about completely separate windows.

I'm on macOS Big Sur 1.1
Hi, this is a macOS Big Sur specific feature. Unfortunately we had to remove it from 2020.3 for the time being due to known issues, but will bring it back in future versions. For more info, please see: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-2893
Ugh, bring this back ASAP. It really helps with productivity. Since it was removed, I've really noticed a productivity impact. I come across something I need, know I worked with it in a recent project, can find that project quickly, bring it up in another tab, find what I was looking for and close that tab out without losing my place in what I'm working on.
"Attach Project" is close, but is something you've got to clean up after (detach when done) and doesn't have the benefit of the "recent projects" list.

This functionality was enabled since 2021.1, you can download the latest version from https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/
It depends on OS settings, so make sure that you have set "Prefer tabs" to "In full screen"/"always" in [Preferences > General] of your macOS.
I love this feature in Intellij Idea, but in the rest of macOS - not so much. It would be ok if they hadn't messed with all the command key short cuts.
Therefore, I would love to be able to enable it independently of the OS settings.
It's not working in pycharm 2021.3... I set Prefer tabs to "in full screen" in my MacOS preferences but always new windows is being opened.
>I set Prefer tabs to "in full screen" in my MacOS
It should be set to "always" in the Mac settings to get the projects opened in tabs.
Please let me know if it works for you.
No, the same behaviour when I changed "Prefer tabs" to "always".
This is very weird. Could you please record a screencast presenting the configured settings and opening a new Project? Please upload it to
to the FTP
https://uploads.jetbrains.com/ and please let me know the filename. Please
also upload your logs folder zipped from ***Help | Collect logs and Diagnostic Data***.

Andrey Resler your comment just changed my life. For the past year almost every day I've been opening the IDE in full screen just so that when i open a new project it opens as a new tab instead of a new window. Then I would exit fullscreen, so it was a hassle. I didn't realize all I had to do was change my mac setting to always open as a new tab. This will save me time every day. Thank you!
The Jetbrains devs may want to consider defaulting to showing projects as tabs instead of new windows, or at least showing some help tip to explain to users they have to change their MacOS setting for it to be tabbed by default. I think most devs would prefer having projects displayed as tabs instead of separate windows...
Hello,
Is there a plan to introduce tabbed window feature on windows platform as well. It really helps in productivity.
Thanks,
Bharat
I would also appreciate it because I work on multiple projects at the same time (microservices) but also different projects where I have to switch between projects quite often. On Mac OS it works pretty nice with tabs. So it would also be nice to see that feature on Linux. Right now I work on Kubuntu.
Hi all,
Can you bring this feature to Linux (and Windows? Right now i have opened 3 project in Idea and gazillion more pulled from repos.
We (dev community) are working with micro-services with gazillion projects.
Please, pretty, pretty, please!
Best Regards,
D.
I would love this option on Windows! Any plans to bring this over?
Anyway to get the tab feature support on MacOS version that is below Big Sur, I’m on Catalina and it has such feature in the system side. But on my editor I cannot even see the arrange option in window toolbar…
I would also love to have this available in Linux.
Voting for such feature on Linux, its a big boost for productivity (less alt-tabbing)
