Updated to 2021 from 2019 and now styling is all different. How do I get it back to the way it was

All of my style choices are gone after paying to update. How to I get the way it was back. Alternatively, how do I get my money back and revert to old version if this isn't possible.

Very frustrated by these changes done without ASKING first

Hi there,

To start: please show what "styling" is different in 2021? Couple of screenshots using bundled default light or Dacrula theme (+ ideally a file with the code as a text so it can be tested locally) that would illustrate the issue will help a lot.

Old version can be downloaded here: https://www.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/download/other.html

You can run multiple IDE versions in parallel (since each version keeps settings in a separate version-specific folder). Just do not open the same project in more than one IDE/version at the same time (otherwise it can loose some project-specific settings that are stored in PROJECT/.idea subfolder)

You can easily see the differences by just opening both versions, the font, colours, and line spacing are all completely different than they were before the update.

Yes, I can provide screenshots if required but the screenshots I took contain private code that I don't want to share on a public forum. I will need an email address/other method to get these to you.

I attempted to use macOS "Time Machine" to go back in time before the update and reset settings using the following method

- Use Time machine to reset 2021 phpstorm to 2019.2

- (in 2019.2) File-> export settings  -> { Settings were saved to zip file }
- Re update to PHPStorm 2021
- (in 2021) File -> manage settings -> import settings -> { import zip file saved earlier }

The zip file was totally ignored, and still just use the default settings from 2021

I had to take screenshots and go through editor preferences line by line to make things look as they did before, wasting about half a day of work over something that should have been opt-in.....

OK... so it's about overall settings/settings in general. Mu initial understanding was that it was affecting the file syntax colors in the file (Color Scheme)...

On Mac the IDE settings are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/<product><version> folder. https://www.jetbrains.com/help/phpstorm/directories-used-by-the-ide-to-store-settings-caches-plugins-and-logs.html (NOTE: the folder might be different if you use JetBrains Toolbox App to install your IDEs).

When you first run the newer version, it searches for older version settings and automatically imports them. I personally do not remember seeing any tickets or forum threads about such "my settings from previous version are not imported on upgrade".

I did not skip any of the versions and it always had worked smooth for me (I'm on Windows, if that makes any diff). Your case might be different.

I may suggest this:

  • backup current 2021.2 settings and other folders (while IDE is closed, of course)
  • delete 2021.2 settings folders
  • launch 2021.2 and it should import your 2019.x version

If it will not import them correctly -- the IDE show have something about that in the idea.log file (Help | Show Log in XXX).

P.S. This all assumes that you do not use IDE Settings Sync plugin (where they synced to JB account).

Other than that: I suggest you use "Submit a Request" link at the top of this page or use "Help | Contact Support..." directly from PhpStorm to create Support ticket where you can privately provide all needed info.

I did this (added steps in my prev message) and my settings were ignored when attempting to re import. Looks like a bug to me, perhaps related to skipping the 2020 version like you mentioned
