Bookmark folder no longer expands in the new Bookmarks (Favorites) panel

Apparently JetBrains thought their Favorites panel bookmarks were too useful and made them simply link to the Project panel directory instead of expanding in the Favorites panel.

Now instead of having a separate list of scratches and notes files in its own panel, I now I have to scroll up and down the Project panel between code and scratches, both of which are huge lists of files and folders. I was using the Favorites panel folder list and its expansions for nicely-formatted notes and scratch files within PHPStorm, which was really nice. Now it's a giant pain in the ***.

How do I get back the previous functionality? I was using v202?.?.? before, now I'm using 2021.3.2, and I'm hating missing this old feature, nevermind the whole "Trusted Project" fiasco.

Yep, the new approach is missing out on many workflows supported previously.
Here are requests related to scratches specifically:

Why would they do that?! This is terrible. I'm feeling like downgrading at this point. The change is adding time to my day now, I have to figure out something better; now I have to add each folder and file individually to bookmarks for them to be there, but then opening them expands Scratches in the Project window...

The scratches window needs to be in its own panel... it's ridiculous to have it in the same panel as the repo folder. There's just way too many top-level folders in the Project panel.

Is there no way to separate these side folders like External Libraries and Scratches and Consoles into their own panels?! I don't know how JetBrains didn't find it a massive pain to have these expanded trying to scroll through and find things.

Well, I'm done using Scratches and Consoles. I've found where the files and folders I made were located (organized by company and project to make Favorites navigation easy and amazing), moved them all to a folder outside of PHPStorm, and will be using VS Code to deal with them.

JetBrains really shouldn't be pushing people to use other companies' editors.

I don't know, maybe most people don't know what I know about the old Favorites panel, but maybe they should (and many devs refuse to update to the latest editor because of nonsense changes like this), and maybe JetBrains should bring back the old behavior, or let us put Scratches and Consoles into its own panel, or let us make a panel just for note files and folders.

You probably know about that, but just in case, it's not necessary to scroll down to Scratches and Consoles, you can switch to it by choosing the corresponding scope in the Project tool window.

Also, there's the Show Scratch Files action available in the keymap, you can assign a custom shortcut to it, but I am not sure if that's gonna do it for you.

I understand that I can filter the Project panel to only show Scratches or repo files... however, often I've wanted folders from each open concurrently in separate areas, which is now not possible with Favorites removed.

So, why not have Scratches and Consoles in its own panel? Is that possible?

I cannot find a request for that on our tracker, so I think there's no great demand for that among the community. Maybe it has to do with the fact that previously it was available in the Favorites tool window.

By the way, IDEA-288531 has been fixed, and scratches folders can be expanded again. The fix will be available with 2022.1 EAP 4 next week.
