About autocomplete and space bar

If I use Pycharm's awesome autocomplete with period, space or other contextual symbols, I find that if I type a word and then hit space, instead of preserving what I've typed, the first option in the popup is selected. suggestions, even if you don't want to select that first option. How can I avoid this behavior and at the same time still use this functionality?
