.rst files should be always displayed in split view. It could be a case of corrupted settings, so could you please try resetting the IDE settings to default by using **File | Manage IDE settings | Restore Default Settings...**? Your current settings will be backed up, so you can revert to them later (to do this, just import settings from the backed up folder).
If this doesn't help, please provide Logs from **Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data**.
Dealing with the same problem here. Resetting IDE settings may work but I don't really see this as a realistic option as I have customized my PyCharm heavily and run dozens of projects in it...

P.S. The documentation says there should be a selector for the view mode, but I think this is a mistake. Will check it.

is there no other way to just close the view mode? I can only change the size in the split view, but not hide the Preview mode.
