Your stacktrace doesn't contain any fixture call and it seems that NPE comes from JUnit.

Probably the reason is that your build script configures JUnit5, but your test uses the JUnit4.

Please create your plugin project using the New Project wizard or the plugin template to have a correct setup:

If you want to use JUnit5, then you will probably need to use JUnit Vintage Engine. It is out of the IntelliJ plugin development scope, so I can't help you with doing that. I suggest asking for help on the community Slack:
