unable to run sql scripts in sql files

i have a db scripts directory in my java gradle project.  However, when opening a sql file, even after attaching it to a session it won't let me run the sql statements.  i have to copy it to a scratch sql session.

Notice how the execute button is disabled.  also ctrl+enter only adds a carriage return in front of the selected text:
