Blank grey screen covering entire IDE after inactivity

I have an issue where, after a few hours of inactivity and completely randomly (does not always happen), a blank grey screen covers the entire PHPStorm window, including the menus, status bar, etc. However, the editor still works behind this veneer! I can type things, open menus, etc. but blindly. Some of the popup hints work, but not others. Moreover, if multiple project windows are open, only some of them might have this problem.

I have seen similar reports, but apparently on those you could still see the main bar, and resizing the window helped. For me it unfortunately does not. Restarting the IDE helps, but the whole point is that this happens at precisely the most sensitive times, when a restart is painful. Speaking of which, it also happens in Rider, WebStorm and maybe IntelliJ (haven't had it open for long lately). I am on Windows 10.

Using the Dracula theme – it might be the culprit according to some reports, but just wanted to hear some feedback from the team. I cannot reliably reproduce this, because it happens after a while, but it occurs on a daily basis.

Hi there,

Does it happen after your PC comes from sleep?

Right now / at a quick glance it looks similar to (from

Check if the workaround mentioned there helps:

Manually resize the IDE window or enter/exit the full screen (View | Appearance | Enter / Exit Full screen).

Hi, it could be somehow related to sleep, but if I put my computer to sleep myself, and then come back from sleep a minute later, the issue doesn't happen.
Also: Workarounds like resizing, full screen, etc. don't help. It looks like most of the other reports are on Macs, where the windows work differently.

Could you please run Help > Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data and share resulting archive next time this happens? You can upload it to & let me know the upload ID.

This helps in my case! Apple mini M1, PhpStorm 2022.3 EAP. But I had the same problem with 2022.2.

That appears to be a known issue: It's fixed and the fix will be included in the next major IDE update. Meanwhile please check if following workarounds help:

  • manually resize the IDE window;
  • enter/exit the full screen (via IDE main menu View | Appearance | Enter / Exit Full screen);
  • or move the IDE window forth and back between displays to force repainting;
