I don't like the direction of the UI changes for Idea CE. It's time to create new IDE
I don't like the direction of the UI changes for IntelliJ Idea. The compact and minimalist look is transformed into an interface in which elements such as menus, sidebars, tabs are enlarged, which makes it possible to work with the tool comfortably only on the external monitor. Introducing a hamburger menu is a pretty bizarre decision. It works fine on small screens of mobile devices. Now, it has been implemented in applications for desktop computer, that cannot be used on notebooks, because the standard UI widgets have been enlarged and there is no way to display them all just like it's been until now. The new UI will be introduced regardless of my opinion and I will have no choice. That's why I'd like to start working on a new IDE based on version 2022.2.4. Its goal would be to keep the compact UI and update it with new functionalities added to the latest CE versions. Over time, I'd like to make it independent as the code becomes more and more different.
For many years, my expectations have been increasingly different from what Intellij proposes in the user interface layer. I disable new UI elements more than I use them. The new UI has nothing to do with minimalism. It is an attempt to solve the problem created by its designers from IntelliJ, enlarging standard UI elements. Hence, by default, we have closed views, removed toolbars. I need help from people who know the source code of IntelliJ Idea. The first step will be to create a test environment, repository and update plan.
I don't want to do it just for myself. I want others to be able to enjoy the results of working together on the IDE. I am aware of the complexity of a tool like IntelliJ Idea.

Hello Vojtech,
It's possible to use previous UI version if you don't like new one.
How long will the old interface be maintained along with the new one?
Best regards,

Vojtech,
The current UI will remain available for at least two years, and we’re not going to remove it until we’ve seen that the vast majority of our users have successfully made the switch to the new UI. Also, very few of the design decisions you see now in the new UI are final, and we’re open to revisiting them based on your feedback.

I see that JetBrains is moving towards a completely unnecessary minimalist trend. Even if the new UI works well and without errors, the distaste for this new interface will continue, and may even increase. I see on forums that programmers are organizing to migrate to other development platforms, stop renewing their licenses and encourage their companies to drop JetBrains products.
My suggestion is that you listen more to your users, really respect them and don't impose changes.
