Chris, you may remove all lines related to debugger from your gemfile, it should work after that

Does your courses controller initializer contain 'debugger' call?

I'd suggest to comment it out, it has no effect on ide debugger (except crashing it)

Yes, it does. When you are stopped at breakpoint you can use Run | Evaluate expression
