I'm using Mac and my cmd+tab doesn't work. :/ But I'm pretty sure it used to work, I don't know what I did that changed that behaviour.

Hum, that's not true. There are modals which allow to switch between the modal and the main window. I'm sure of it, I've used the Intellij suite (phpstorm, pycharm, rubymine, webstorm..) for years ...
