Correct. Now you see what I want. The plugin should exist and come with IntelliJ. If it doesn't, then it doesn't exist to most users.

It looks like I will be looking at LogBack via the native SLF4J api.

It seems pretty easy. The default configuration (without a config file) logs everything to the console. I need to work on using a configuration file, but all looks very good.

I am using JDK6 also and without many plugins, but still slow. It is not CPU. The processor will be idle, but the editor is very sluggish.

I see pauses on a WinXP single core machine, but none of a SLED 10, dual core machine.
