It works as expected if the project is cloned from the remote repository initially, but not when trying to start from existing code and push to a new repo.

A little reading goes a long way. In Mercurial, the clone command automatically adds a default path to a repo's hgrc file. Push/Pull Changeset commands do not. So for these existing projects, I ...
