Evaluate expression to the main debugger toolbar (new ui)

已回答

So, I'm running the 2023.1.1 (Ultimate) with the new ui. Been liking it so far, but one of the top features for my debugging usage is the Evaluate Expression is hiding in the [...] menu on the main toolbar. I recently figured out you can right click the toolbars to configure them to your liking, but I can't find that action in the list, even tho it's icon is listed.

Is it really missing from custom actions? Is there a way to bring it back to main buttons?

Please upvote https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-313960

How to customize debug toolbar:

  1. Go to ⋮ | Add actions
  2. Pick "Evaluate expression"

I have been using IntelliJ for many years, but with this update, I have decided to discontinue its usage. The decision to move this particular action to the context menu seems rather unintelligent.

Thanks for the flexibility to customize the debug toolbar. I like the new UI updates. Seems rather petty to discontinue use of this IDE altogether simply because it's not there by default and especially when there's a VERY simple solution to adding it back to the toolbar.

It's in the path below

"Add Action  >> Main Menu > Run > Debugger Actions > Debugging Actions >Evaluate Expression…"

Search doesn't work

For those who are still looking for “Evaluate Expression” , go to Customize Toolbar →  Add → try searching for “Show Execution Point” and above you will find Evaluate Expression.

Somehow it doesn't show up on searching “Evaluate Expression”.

It seems it is not found under Debugger Actions, but Main Menu → Run → Debugger Actions → Debugging Actions → Evaluate Expression.

Good luck!

Thank you Vladut Zamfi for saving me firstration with new IJ,  I dont know based on waht these calls are made to change things and decides to keep show breakpoints in the main debug tool view but , evaluate expression out at hte bottom?  statistically how often you have to see all breakpoints vs evaluate the expressions?

Are these marketing ppl? makes 0 sense. Psycholgocal designers? we are too much invested in this IDE? is there any type of  revenue to be genereated with that icon not in the main view? just trying to find a logical reason, and the icon/function is there .. just at the bottom, but i cannot drag it, I have to open the whole new dialog to do it ?-- like what are you doing?

the Top toolbar (build and navigation) is also screwd in 2024.3.3.  why do you force ppl. to think your way? why not have a multiple views with one defult to older ui that everyone is familer with ? what does it buy you? is there a financial gain? pls. enlighten us for the reson of our firstrations and west of time ..

Vivek Shah we understand that any changes in the tool you rely on could be painful for the habits and productivity at first. However all the functionality you need can be brought to front easily.

Navigation, build and other popular actions can already be added to the main toolbar from the toolbar context menu with a couple of clicks. Starting from 2025.1, the same will be possible in the debug window toolbar.

If you miss anything else, please check our knowledge base for the most popular tweaks that make the new UI look as close to the classic one as possible. Should you have any further questions after that - or spot any other functionality that has become harder to reach - please let us know, we will try our best to assist.

thank you for your response.. after a brief look ..it seems impossible to achieve even you have unlimited time. and If I can wirte 1 of 5  task that I configured IJ for 1 day..  and send it to @Elon Musk   :)

New , not all "tools" are available as I had to hand pick each one of it, and it looks ugly

where is the most important build project icon? it is now a side tool bar and does not build. it opens a build window. does not have any help to build the project , if not for the shortcuts, this is useless to us. -directly coming from developer.. Can you reveal the name on who desigend it and rationale behind this change?

I dont say dont do your improvements etc,  go ahead, but why not have an option in setting to just flip back (like model vs non-model commit dialog you had) ? do you have revenue associated with this design? than I can understand.. but otherwize there is no reason for you to agitate us and make us go through the learning process, there is no value to us for doing that and wast of time.  Lets say you have 10k users, and on an avg 1 person needs 10 mins ( optimistic ) to “configure” new ui widgets, than you have costed 100k mins cumulatively to the companies that bought the IJ or upgraded it correct? do you have justification for it? how that cost will be recouped by companies using this new design?

if you add java 21 support to previous verison, I am happy to surrender this new verison .. any way AI is a separate sub and our co. does not allow it.

It might be unintuitive at the first glance, but choosing an action from the popular actions in the main toolbar context menu, Add to main toolbar…, adds it to the relevant group.

You might still want to reorder or remove certain parts - in this case please consider using the Customize toolbar… action. You can find more detailed instruction in Help.

where is the most important build project icon?

It's there in the toolbar context menu too, I can add it with 2 clicks and it appears where it was - to the left of the run widget.

Could you please let me know if the same steps to add the Build toolbar button work for you?

you have made all excellent changes, look and feel is awesome, what a decision for taking away annoying useless icons/making it dark to let us focus on main containt (thank you for decideing for us), and so on and on, also the new feature of not letting us intall the pycharm plugi is good too. .. what a great improvement..

Now if this has fed your ego, can you let usk now if there a  way to use IJ ver 2022 with Java 21? I will pay for 2024/2025 verison

I have IJ UL.  , trying to install pycharm prof. see what is selected on left, and see what it is trying to install.

what are you guys changing?

@vivek, what do you see if click “download” link on the Python plugin page?

I download it.. and tried to install it from disk.  the march 18 python plugin from disk, with this error ..

Vivek Shah looks like something initially went wrong while downloading the Python Community (ID: PythonCore) plugin that the Python plugin depends on. That could be a network glitch or a wrong plugin configuration. Sadly, I'm unable to spot the exact reason because I failed to reproduce the same issue in my environment (IDEA Ultimate 2024.3.5 on Windows 11).

It should now be enough to install the Python Community plugin. Please try installing it in the IDE Settings | Plugins, Marketplace tab.

If the issue is still actual for you after that, please share IDE logs (Help | Collect logs and diagnostic data). You can use our upload service to share the diagnostic info, just let us know the upload ID. Thank you!
