Will EAP versions make incompatible changes to project configuration files?
In other words, can I use EAP and stable on the same project without EAP making incompatible changes to the project config files in `.idea`?

Normally, this is not an issue. We do not intentionally make incompatible configurations in future versions of our IDEs.
However, given the nature of EAP, it's hard to guarantee there won't be, at some point, a bug that might corrupt the project config. Of course, this will never affect your actual project files, so recreating the .idea in a stable version will solve the issue.
