Switcher (ctrl + tab) too narrow

When I use ctrl→tab to switch the current edited file, the window is too narrow and the file path get cut off on the right. The window edge resizing doesn't work with the ctrl key pressed. If I access the Switcher through the menu Navigate / Search everywhere, then I can resize the window but the new size is only applied when I open the Switcher from “Search everywhere”. The size using ctrl→tab remains the same, cut off.

I use PyCharm 2023.2.1 on Ubuntu 22.04 KDE.

Hi David,

We will discuss the issue internally. Thank you for letting us know.

Workaround:

  • Go to "Settings | Keymap" and look for the “Switcher” action
  • Assign “Shift + Tab” to the “Switcher” shortcut
  • Open the Switcher again with “Shift + Tab” and resize it
  • The size will be kept. Restore the default keymap in “Settings | Keymap”.

Thanks for your help. I've tried your recommendation but, unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. When I reassign and use Shift + Tab, the window behaves differently: the window does not close automatically when I release the Shift key but stays open. The second difference is that the size is saved but only if I use Shift + Tab. After restoring the default shortcut Ctrl + Tab, the size stays as usual, too narrow and cut off  :( .

I guess this window size have to be stored in some config file. Luckily it is a text file and I can edit it. Do you know where is the config file where this window's size is stored?

I've found in ~/.config/JetBrains/PyCharmCE2023.2/workspace/ a file that seems to contain the Switcher size. If I edit it, I get the size changed but only if I open the Switcher without using Ctrl. + Tab . Could it be that the width is calculated and not stored when using Ctrl. + Tab ?

No matter if I access the switcher through "search everywhere" or with any non-ctrl shortcut, the new size is ignored when using ctrl-key. Is like if ctrl key would make the window to be resized despite the configured size.

I created a ticket https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-333944 At the moment, the best workaround is changing the shortcut permanently, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your help, Nadia.

This is an issue in Rider also. (Issue is logged for “IntelliJ Platform” so I guess you must know this.)

I think an easier workaround is to use Search for Action (Search for Everything → Actions tab) and then search for “Switcher” and click once on it. This opens the switcher without holding the Ctrl key and you can resize it. (This works in Rider not sure about other programs.)
