i updated my intelliJ and now i can not start it again. All i get is a message saying no matching vm found and java 1.8 or later is required.
What do i do?

Please make sure you do not override JetBrains Runtime, see https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/206544879.
Delete idea.jdk file from the Configuration directory: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/directories-used-by-the-ide-to-store-settings-caches-plugins-and-logs.html#config-directory, do not set environment variable overriding the JDK.
Please also check you downloaded the correct IDE version for your CPU architecture (x64 vs aarch64).
If the issue persists, please specify your OS and the CPU, provide the file name of the IDE that you downloaded and installed, attach the screenshot of the error.
