Any way to recover control when PyCharm hangs upon Getting Description?

E.g.

Cancel click is ignored. The only response is to moving that dialog.

I'd rather avoid CTRL+ALT+TAB since that loses all the fold states - and unsaved changes, I presume.

Hi chrisjj , would you please share logs from Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data for better understanding of the issue? Please upload it to https://uploads.services.jetbrains.com and let me know the upload ID.

I'd be happy to … once I've found how to get back control of the program. As I said, the only response is to moving that dialog. Oh and title bar buttons, of course.

And attempting the launch a second instance fails. No idea why, since I presume such is normally allowed.

Thanks, but there's no such log directory.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\  - - - > “Windows cannot find…”

@chrisjj , please try to locate the logfile manually from C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\JetBrains\<PyCharmVersion>\

It does not exist:

This is 2019.4 [<<error. Correction 2019.3], though I can't imagine that should make a difference.

@chrisjj , I see. Please check for log in C:\Users\Chris\.PyCharm2019.4\system\log.

Is there any reason to use an outdated version of PyCharm? Does it behave as expected on the recent 2024.1.2?

I found in C:\Users\Chris\.PyCharmCE2019.3\system\log (I'm using CE).

I uploaded that most recent folder prior to the freeze. 2024_06_04_TDBxpiFZe114aTEbsZhiM4 . Thanks for a nice uploader.

I'm using the latest that works on my OS. Windows 7.

> Does it behave as expected on the recent 2024.1.2?

I'd be unlikely to be able to tell. “Works as expected” is not occasionally hanging, and my 2019.3 was doing that fine… until it wasn't.

chrisjj , thank you for the thread dumps!

Would you please also upload idea.log from C:\Users\Chris\.PyCharmCE2019.3\system\log after reproducing the issue?

I don't know how to reproduce the issue.

Perhaps you can help. Does that “Getting description” box appear automatically on the input you see, or do I have to press a key to get it?

This looks similar to PY-40019 (I was hoping to confirm it from the log) and must be fixed in 2020.2 release.

Thanks. Still an answer to the question would be useful, if available.

Please share idea.log from C:\Users\Chris\.PyCharmCE2019.3\system\log after reproducing the issue.

You can try the steps for reproduction from the issue above (just start typing anything in the Python console)

It didn't  show the problem.

And I don't see how that helps the question. The question is: Any way to recover control when PyCharm hangs upon Getting Description?

chrisjj , apologies.

To answer your question we need to understand the root cause of the misbehavior - to check the log after the issue is reproduced.

0

OK, but while there's no reproduction, does the log from the reported occurrence not suffice?

0

I am afraid, no. Although, it looks similar to PY-40019, we can't say it 100% sure. Please collect idea.log when you face the issue.
