Update to 2024.x

I got a prompt to update my 2023.x.y IntelliJ IDEA and the update worked normally. After doing it the IDE prompted me to update to 2024.x, but instead of updating in place it sent me to the download page.
If I download and execute… it it going to do another update in place, or will it slaughter my work environment and leave me with a blank one? The way it behaved makes me suspect the 2nd.

As commented above, your settings / recent projects will be migrated automatically. You can then uninstall the old version.
Another option is to use https://www.jetbrains.com/toolbox-app/ for the installation and updates in the future.
I downloaded and installed Toolbox, but it looks weird.
- It recognizes my instance of IntelliJ IDEA CE as already installed and offers the option to UPDATE.
- It fails to recognize my instance of IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate as being already installed and thus it only gives me the option to INSTALL.
Seems wrong/broken.
Can you clarify what I'm seeing?
You need to install all the products via Toolbox again. Then you can uninstall the manually installed versions (once you run them at least once to make sure the settings were imported).
