How to enter unicode characters in CLion?

Specifically, I'd like to use the lower-case lambda character: λ (0x03bb). I've tried to enter it in CLion/Linux (Fluxbox) and also IDEA/Linux (Gnome) without any joy. I've tried all the keystroke combinations I could find including the common Ctrl-Shift-u combination.
Does https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-72989 imply that Unicode isn't supported at all, or is it just the supplementary-plane characters that aren't supported?
