intellij 9 - cannot load scala facet for project

I recently tried to update to the latest intellij 9 ce and the nightly  scala plugin to try out the fsc compiling. I'm on mac osx.

Unfortunately it didn't work, so i removed the maia build and  reinstalled intellij 9.01 ce and the 0.3.473 scala plugin.
The preferences show that the plugin successfully installed and the  scala facet is listed in the project structure.

However, the project doesn't seem to be recognized as a scala  project.  The .scala files doesn't have any color highlighting and the built-in  compiling doesn't even show up.

Any ideas how to debug or force intellij to recognize the project as   scala? where are the intellij/scala-plugin log files?
