Need advice on "simple" graphics

Hello,

Newbee to Jetbrains/rubymine here. I work on Win7-64bit and  I'd like to make a project that does (what I consider) simple character graphics. I'd like to be able to create a window and write/read(?)  ascii data to a specific address in the window.  Does anyone know of anexisting widget, tool, gem, etc. that I can use to do this??

Also what graphics package or GUI builders do people here use? Are there any that have a special affinity to Ruby Mine???
