I don't know what you mean by CMD+6. On the Window > Tools Window menu I see the TODO listed and next to it is ALT+6. When I hit that it just minimizes the window, it doesn't remove the TODO button from the bottom of the IDE.
Ahh... I just see where I asked my question wrong: I know how to minimize the window, but I think you have to admit, this IDE is pretty "busy", so if I'm not using something I would prefer it not be displayed so as to reduce the visual clutter.
At the bottom of my IDE I have the following buttons: Find, Run, Changes, TODO. I don't always need TODO, so I'd like to remove it. Other windows have a red "X" on them that you can use for this purpose. The TODO window does not.
I apologize, for some reason I presumed you're on Mac.
But you got it right — some tool-windows can not be removed completely. They are: Project, Structure, TODO and Changes.
Those other tool-windows that can be closed appear when you invoke some operation, e.g. a Search or Run/Debug, etc. There are no operations for the 4 "permanent" tool windows though. So they always stay available for immediate access.
Please note that you can drag those buttons and place them all on the vertical space near 'Project' and 'Structure'. This would save some space.
You can open/close tool windows using CMD+<window number>
For TODO window it is CMD+6
