IntelliJ + Dual monitor? Not really.
Hi all,
I'm just trying out IntelliJ with a dual monitor setup, and maybe it's the EAP, I'm not sure, but so far, I don't like it. I've tried to move the output window of the run screen to the second monitor, and while that sort of works (except that there's no maximize button, stuff like that), it doesn't give a nice user experience. I've moved the output to the second window, and when I try to resize the window, it's gone. No idea where it went. It's not on the first monitor, and it's definetly not on the second monitor. Only by restoring the window layout I can restore the output window. Then I tried to do this with other (Project View, Debugger, Plugins, etc) windows, but every time the same effect: windows keep disappearing.. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, maybe it's the EAP, but please fix it...
Erik

Btw: when minimizing the output screen, and showing it again, it end's up on the wrong monitor...
Hi!
I use IDEA with a dual-monitor setup as well, and while it's not
perfect, it works quite well. I'm using Linux, btw., and the behaviour
depends heavily on the type of windowmanager used.
Biggest problems I have: popup windows appear on the 'wrong' monitor -
for example, I would expect the Settings dialog to appear on the monitor
where the main window is - it usually doesn't.

I tried to reproduce this with no success. This is what I did:
Ran a debug session, detached the console view
Moved to the console view to the second monitor
Resized the console view, seems ok, didn't disappear
Restored back the console view and re-detached it again - it showed
at the same position/size
Is it what doesn't work at your side?

I think it would be nice if you could truly detach windows, so they could be completely independent.

Not sure I understand - you can do exactly that. I usually have the
editor on one monitor, debug window (+ emulator window) on the other. Do
you mean something different?

Hi Kirill,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, this is exactly what's happening. I'm using Windows XP, I don't know what OS you tried? I can create a screencast of it, I think, but it wouldn't help: it's just like you say: when I resize the window on the secondary monitor, they disappear, and when I minimize it (minus icon), and reopen it, it will appear on the first monitor instead of the second.
If you want more information, please let me know!
I agree! When splitting IntelliJ over 2 windows, and reactiving one of the windows will focus intellij as a whole, obsuring other windows. It would be nice to have a browser open at one monitor, and the debug output (console) on the other, but not have intellij obscure the browser on monitor 1 when focussing the console at monitor 2.
I tested in on a mac, will give it a try on XP, thanks.

Has any progress been made diagnosing this? I'm having the same problem Erik reported.
I just started trying to use dual monitors with IntelliJ IDEA 8.1 #9732. If I take the following steps:
1) Change one of the panes (TODO for example) to 'Float'.
2) Move the pane over to the 2nd monitor
3) resize the pane while on the 2nd monitor
-- pane disappears --
I'm then unable to get the pane back except by turning off 'Float'. This has happened with every pane I've tried.
Running Windows XP using an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M.
Thanks,
Ken Johnson
FWIW I have never been able to get Idea to use two monitors in any useful
way. I have tried it many times with many different EAPs and machines.

This scenario works fine for me. Which monitor is your primary (#1) monitor?
My setup is:
IDEA on secondary monitor (rotated to be taller than wider)
Float the "Project" and "Structure" windows
Dragged the windows and resized them on the primary monitor
I have an NVidia Quadro NVS 285 running on Windows XP x64.

I'm running Windows XP using an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M. Both monitors are Dell E207WFP's. (The primary is using the DVI port, the secondary is using the analog VGA port.
I recently updated to the latest nVidia drivers (from Dell's website). And I HAVE been able to get this working now. I had to delete my .IWS file to be able to get the windows that had previously disappeared back - but everything seems to be working fine now.

Edwin,
I think the distinction is that while a detached IDEA window is separate from the main IDEA window, it is grouped with all IDEA windows into a "layer" of sorts. Contrast this with multiple windows in some other multi-window applications. The z-ordering of their windows may be interleaved—each window order independently without respect to which application owns it. The IDEA windows will either be all above another application's window(s) or all below some other application's window. When they overlap, that matters. You can't be interacting with IDEA, have, say, the Structure window detached and also have a browser window with some JavaDoc HTML in it on top of the IDEA Structure window. The Structure window will always obscure the browser window.
It's kind of like the Mac that way (if it still works that way in OS X).

This is the most annoying thing about IntelliJ in my opinion. I don't plan on investing any time into 9.0 or higher unless I can turn off "always on top" for the tool windows.

Is there any update to this thread? I've been watching the new EAP and I don't see any dual monitor support popping up: http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/IDEADEV/IDEA+X+First+EAP+Release+Notes
IntelliJ has terriable dual monitor support. I really need to be able to peel off an editor tab and put it on a seperate windows - similar to Chrome and FireFox. I understand this is difficult but it really needs to be done. Everyone has dual monitor these days and could benefit from using two screens when developing.
Totally agree - this is one area where IDEA is quite weak.
Please vote for http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/issue/IDEABKL-67
I've been using IntelliJ with multiple monitors for years, on several Windows machines, and had few problems - except for one very irritating one. If I float the run or debug Window onto the second monitor (as I normally do), and then shut down, and then start up next time with only my primary monitor, the run/debug windows are about 20 screens wide and I have to spend several minutes dragging the window borders inwards to fit the screen.
I'm having the exact same problem, debug window gets at least 20 screens wide.
Running IntelliJ 11.1.
Any way to fix this or at least work around it?
Hello thy mic. Could you please go to About dialog and press Ctrl(or Meta) + C and then paste the result here. Thanks.
IntelliJ IDEA 11.1.1
Build #IU-117.117
Built on March 30, 2012
JDK: 1.6.0_31
VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
I'm having the same problem today: My debug window is 20 monitors wide.
My "about" information is:
IntelliJ IDEA 12.1.3
Build #IU-129.451, built on May 10, 2013
JDK: 1.6.0_33
VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM by Sun Microsystems Inc.
I have this exact problem in 12.1.3 in Windows 8. I really wish I could take advantage of multiple monitors. Although right now I just want to figure out how to get my Find window back - maybe once I restart.
I've been using the IDE on dual monitors of slightly different sizes this week (laptop screen + a larger VGA), and I have found that even without breaking sub-windows out of the IDE, it performs poorly, if at all, on anything but the "main system monitor" -- the one where the start menu and program icon bar reside. When maximized on another monitor it still seems to "think" that the "real screen size" is that of the main system monitor. And sometimes it won't "paint" the IDE window contents on anything but the main system monitor.
And it's not a monitor problem: When I make "the other monitor" the Windows system monitor, the IDE works fine there (for a change), and fails on the old main (laptop internal) monitor.
Windows 7 Enterprise, SP1, 64-bit
IntelliJ IDEA 15.0.6 (... because has to "vet" versions before allowing us to use them. ... for good reason, as we are very heavily dependent on custom plugins of our own design.)
Dual monitor on macOS 11.6 and Intellij 2021.2.3 - unusable... I have intellij on fullscreen. Problems:
with CODE WITH ME same problem - access approving dialog on nonfullscreen workspace and still moving to this workspace
I restarting intellij every hour!
