+1 on the new look. But it'll be even nicer when the tab placement option gets fixed (http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-25760) so us weirdos that like the tabs stacked rather than linear can put them back on the right (or left).
There is one problem. It appears that the first time the tabs go to multiline mode, the new tab to be placed on the second line stretches all the way across the tab area. Attached is a screen shot.

We've tweaked this behavior and it's going to work better in the next EAP.

I haven't looked at the new tabs yet, and I do not dare to ask, but..ehh.... a close button/icon on the tab....??
Take a look at for a discussion on that. Some people want it, others don't. Of the ones that don't, most agree, it would be ok, if you could turn it off in an option setting.
I would like to see a close button on the tabs, but you may find this worth a try.
There is a plugin called MouseGestures that will let you assign functions to swipes of the mouse. I have it set up so that a swipe from left to right will close the current editor window. You might find it better than a close button.
It hasn't been updated in a while, so I hope it still works in Version 8.
+1
For a long time it was one aspect that was weaker (in presentation terms) than the rest of the UI.

I saw the new tabs and squeed with glee - then noticed it was only the
look that changed and not behavior - no tear off editor to another window :(
Actually - I did see behavior change - double clicking the tab no longer
maximized the editor for me.
And it works under Mac OS X 10.5.2!
That's great!

Hello Erik,
It's not yet there, but yes, it's going to be added.
