6.0 Crashes on startup
I'm not terribly surprised, every version recently has done the same for
me and there's been no feedback on the subject. I start IntelliJ and get:

Then it deletes all files in the bin directory.
This has been reported repeatedly by me and at least one other person, a
bug has been opened (http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-9213).
Can't someone at Jetbrains take a look at that code and tell me what
Idea is looking for when it crashes so that I can make the damed thing
run, I'm rather tiered with copying over files from an old build just to
get around this since I've got no real idea what else I'm changing when
I do this.

Try running IDEA with
-Didea.home.path=<IDEA INSTALLATION DIRECTORY>
and see if it helps.
You can specify this option in IDEA_HOME\bin\idea.exe.vmoptions or idea.vmoptions (on Linux). On Mac it can be specified in the Info.plist file JVM Options section in IDEA installation directory.
For some reason IDEA is not able to automatically detect it in your configuration.
Strangely there is no longer an idea.exe.vmoptions included in the 6.0
install. But if I create that file and add that option it doesn't seem
to make any difference and then idea deletes it along with all the other
bin files then shows me the same exception.

Please specify your OS version.
Try to reinstall IDEA into the new empty directory. What is the directory name you install IDEA to?
Can you provide the complete file listing in IDEA_HOME directory and subdirectories right after you install IDEA?
I'm accepting the default install directory of:
c:\Program Files\JetBrains\IntelliJ IDEA 6.0
and defaults for all other options. There was no .IntelliJIdea60
directory in my home dir. As far as I can tell this is a clean install.
Is there anything else that might need cleaning up?
I do have 5.5.2 installed, but I really don't want to remove that - I
need one of them to work :)

I am having the same problem. I have a completely fresh install of 6.0 in Windows XP installed to C:\Program Files\JetBrains\IntelliJ IDEA 6.0. I accepted all of the default values during the installation and went ahead and tried to startup the program, resulting in the error that Serge Baranov posted (and is listed in the bug report he referenced.)
I am guessing that it wiped out what's in the bin directory, but I have no idea (no pun intended) because I have no previous version to reference. The only thing in my bin directory is idea.exe.
Going to try and reinstall, see what gets put in the bin directory, and then possibly try the workaround of copying those files back into the directory if/when they get wiped out.

As another workaround you can try to download the zipped IDEA version, unpack and run via idea.bat (set IDEA_JDK env variable first):

At any rate, I used your work around to run the idea.bat file in the /bin directory instead of idea.exe, and that worked. Doesn't exactly fill me with warm & fuzzies about the product, but it'll have to do since I paid for a license!
In order to test that the bin directory was being wiped out, I just copied & pasted the files to a temp directory, then ran the idea.exe, saw them disappear, then copied the files back. I'm seriously doubting this is a virus that specifically affects the bin directory of the IDEA installation when executing the idea.exe.

it sounds like a virus has attached itself to their .exe that deletes all the files in the directory where it started

Yeah, I had the same issue for a few builds (reported on the forums several
times) and then, at some point, the things started to work. No changes on
my side, from what I can tell, I kept installing the EAP builds following
the same pattern (clean directory, in C:\Program Files\JetBrains\Demetra\IntelliJ
IDEA buildNo).
The fact that it got away on its own made me think you changed something.
BTW, this thing started when something was changed in the startup files (as
reported by JetBrains), at the time I kept running the problematic EAP builds
by copying older versions of the bin directory into the new install dir (as
the freshly installed bin content got deleted consistently no matter where
I tried installing IDEA).

Could you please try with idea.exe attached (just replace existing one). This one is built with updated exe4j version (the tool we use to build native windows launcher).
If that won't help, we will downgrade to exe4j version we were using to build beta.
