Lockups: is there a workaround?
Man did Sun really screw things up this bad with the jdk 5 update? I mean
IDEA is locking up all over the place. Even with Marcus Brito's vm parameters
I still get some lockups in idea, and it is better for idea, but the problem
is other apps just hang when IDEA does a gc and it's in either the background
or foregroud.
This is crazy, is there really no solution to this? Is the Mac officially
now better than window to work with idea? I don't have this problem on my
OSX PB with JDK 5 from ADC... which is the same version as the one on windows.
(yes I know different impls)
There has to be something, I can't imagine everyone has hyperthreaded machines
and is not feeling the pain.
Thanks

I have a hyperthreaded P4 and I'm able to run IDEA 5 without troubles

release. I'm not using any of the more recent 5.0.x EAP releases.

The people in my office with non hyper-threaded machines have been feeling the pain quite significantly. The recent EAP combined with the VM settings makes it feel a lot better than it used to be, but using IDEA on their machines compared to mine (luckily I have HT), it's amazing the difference it appears to make!
Could someone please point to a description of whatever problems/changes were introduced in the JDK 5 update? I keep seeing references to it which include no specifics.
Thanks.
I'm on XPsp2, Pentium-M 1700mz laptop, 2gb ram, build 3542, jdk 1.5.0_04. My primary project has around 3k classes.
I don't notice any real GC issues. Only occasionally (few times an hour under heavy usage) will I notice GC's, but that only happens after IDEA looses focus.
