Does project deletion clean up cache?

As I learned IDEA holds all index caches in a central location, also project specific indices.

What does IDEA do if I delete a project from the file system? Does it detect the deletion and cleans up the cache or are the caches grow-only ones?

Does the cache size affect indexing speed?
